The 14th Ministerial meeting on Foreign Affairs of the 5+5 Dialogue was held in Algiers on 21 January, with the Algerian-French co-presidency on the theme “Western Mediterranean: promoting shared, sustainable and inclusive economic and social development regarding common challenges in the region “. The conference took place in a context where the countries of the region have different challenges such as migration, youth employment, mobility, training, women’s entrepreneurship, urbanization, the impact of climate change and the threat of terrorism, radicalization and organized crime.
The Ministers welcomed the achievements accomplished in the sectoral ministerial meetings of the “Dialogue 5 + 5” since the last Ministerial meeting held in Marseille on 28 October 2016.
The Ministers thus discussed in depth the following topics: the reinforcement of the political dialogue on regional issues of common interest; regional security issues like the fight against terrorism and radicalization, the conflicts in the Sahel, Libya, Syria, Iraq and the peace process in the Middle East.
The Ministers are also convinced that the most pertinent approach to cooperation in the Western Mediterranean region in the long-term is a human, economic, social and sustainable approach. It allows to tackle the root causes of common challenges. The Ministers therefore call for the development of a Euro-Mediterranean partnership through a synergy between the 5+5 Dialogue and the Union for the Mediterranean, with a Europe-Maghreb-Mediterranean-Africa depth as neighbourhood zones.
Other meetings and seminars were held as part of the 5+5 Dialogue. The 2nd MedThink 5 + 5 Forum took place in Lisbon on 6 and 7 July 2017. The conference, entitled “The 5 + 5 Dialogue in a Changing Region”, was distributed in four thematic sessions that counted on the participation of 40 experts from different think-tanks from ten countries of the Western Mediterranean, which were received by the co-chairmanship of the 5+5 Dialogue (France and Algeria) as well as by the Secretary General of the UfM, UMA and the authorities of the host country.
After the 2nd MedThink 5 + 5 Forum, a forthcoming forum will take place: the 3rd MedThink 5 + 5 Forum will be held in Algiers (Algeria) in 2018 and will focus on the main themes addressed at the last Ministerial meeting of Foreign Affairs.
