On 20 February a delegation of the Centre d’Études des Transports pour la Méditerranée Occidentale (CETMO) took part in the 80th meeting of the United Nations Committee on Inland Transport Committee (ITC) (UNECE-Geneva).
CETMO was one of the founding members of the MedThink 5 + 5 and since 1997 has been acting as Technical Secretariat of the Group of Transport Ministers of the Western Mediterranean (GTMO 5 + 5), with the aim of fostering the development of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation regarding transport.
CETMO’s intervention, as a permanent observer of the ITC, highlighted the importance of the EUROMED region and the need to finish the transmaghrébin multimodal transport corridor. Among the main topics discussed at the meeting, the preservation of connection between the two shores of the Mediterranean is essential, as well as the creation of new infrastructures such as the Transmaghrébin Multimodal Transport Corridor to develop trade in the region as well as training and knowledge sharing between the two shores. In the end, CETMO has highlighted the need for an extension of the Mediterranean corridor to the Maghreb countries in order to have a Mediterranean transport network. To this end, it is necessary to develop infrastructure and specific training for experts.
