The MedThink 5 + 5 network organised an online conference on 7 May 2021 (12:00-14:00 CEST) devoted to the issue of fostering women’s economic participation in the Western Mediterranean. Entitled “Fostering Women’s Economic Participation in the Western Mediterranean: Successful Policies for in-depth Transformations“, the event took place in the context of the Spanish co-presidency of the 5+5 Dialogue in 2021.

This conference mapped the gender economic disparities within Western Mediterranean societies, mainly in the Maghreb, before highlighting national initiatives that have already had an impact on the economy and public policies. The dialogue ensuing from the discussion and the exchange of good practices led to the formulation of public policy recommendations that aim at paving the way for in-depth economic and social transformations.

The keynote speeches were delivered by Cristina Gallach, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation of the Government of Spain, Nasser Kamel, Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), and Carlos Conde, Head of the Middle East Africa Division of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). They were followed by a round table with representatives of civil society from different Maghreb countries involved in promoting women’s economic participation, and finally a discussion with the public.
