This publication, part of the work of GTMO 5+5, brings together seven articles analysing the ways in which the transport sector in the Western Mediterranean can develop its competitiveness and meet its climate objectives. They include policy recommendations to help strengthen the sector's resilience and competitiveness while meeting climate objectives in terms of decarbonisation.

This publication, under the work plan of GTMO 5+5, is a collection of six papers that analyse current trends in the transport and logistics sector, particularly with regard to trade, maritime transport, and environmental and social sustainability. They include policy recommendations to help deal with the ongoing changes and disruptions resulting from the COVID-19 crisis and the war in Ukraine, among others.

Report of the thematic seminar MedThink5+5, co-organised by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) and the Centre for Transportation Studies for the Western Mediterranean (CETMO, technical Secretariat of GTMO 5+5), which aimed at analysing and discussing the impacts of the COVID-19 and the future of transport and logistics through multisectoral and multidisciplinary lenses.

By looking at the political, transnational, environmental, social, and economic effects on the different transport and logistic sectors triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic from different multidisciplinary angles, this publication offers a 360-degree perspective on the transport and logistics sector in the Mediterranean region.

This conference mapped the gender economic disparities within Western Mediterranean societies, mainly in the Maghreb, before highlighting national initiatives that have already had an impact on the economy and public policies. The dialogue ensuing from the discussion and the exchange of good practices led to the formulation of public policy recommendations that aim at paving the way for in-depth economic and social transformations.

With the aim to analyse the socioeconomic consequences of the COVID-19 crisis to better understand the challenges of the recovery in the countries of the Western Mediterranean, the MedThink 5+5 brought together experts from countries of the 5+5 Dialogue in a new webinar entitled “From Crisis to Recovery in the Western Mediterranean: Challenges and Opportunities on the road to a Post-COVID-19 Sustainable Growth” on 11 November 2020.

While the Covid-19 health crisis was hitting Western Mediterranean countries hard, the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) invited several experts to exchange ideas in the framework of a MedThink 5+5 webinar in order to learn lessons from this exceptional situation in terms of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation and make recommendations to foster health cooperation in the region, notably in the framework of the 5+5 Dialogue.

The 4th MedThink 5+5 Forum brought together more than fifty experts and representatives of think tanks and public diplomacy institutions from the member states of the 5+5 Dialogue with the aim of discussing the state and prospects of regional cooperation and how innovative alliances can be built. The Forum was devoted to the unifying role of the 5+5 Dialogue and analysed the results of the Summit of the Two Shores, held in Marseille (France) in June 2019, the consolidation of an environmentally-friendly and resilient socioeconomic model in the Mediterranean.

Milan hosted an international seminar on migration management in the Western Mediterranean, organised by the MedThink 5+5 think tank network and coordinated by the IEMed, in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean and the Italian Institute for International Political Studies (ISPI).

Organisé par le réseau de think tanks MedThink 5+5, la réunion a été coordonnée par l’IEMed (Barcelone), en collaboration avec l’OCP Policy Center (Rabat) avec l’appui du Secrétariat de l’Union pour la Méditerranée.

This publication includes four papers by researchers who took part in the second MedThink 5+5 Forum held in Lisbon in July 2017. Coming from member institutions of the MedThink 5+5 network, they discuss the current state of play in Libya and propose ways to stabilize the country, particularly with regard to the role of the member states of the 5+5 Dialogue.

The annual conference of the MedThink 5+5 network (Lisbon 6 and 7 July 2017) paid particular attention to the impact of instability in the Sahel, security and migration on the Libyan scene, the participation of civil society actors and the strengthening of economic and trade integration in the Western Mediterranean.

This Report reflects upon the contents and conclusions of the first workshop of the MedThink 5+5 network held in Tunis in December 2016. It adresses a theorical approach on the feasibility of the co-development theory, and it also focuses on the analysis of co-development, human security concepts and the possibility for the Western Mediterranean actors to further cooperate in the field of job creation for young people.

This Policy Study is the outcome of the work undertaken after the I Forum MedThink 5+5 entitled “The 5+5 Dialogue as a Mechanism of Integration and Regional Cooperation: For a common reflection on the Western Mediterranean” and it comprises papers commissioned to ten authors that give their views on the current state of play and challenges of the different ministerial formats of the Western Mediterranean Forum.

This Report aims to reflect the content and the conclusions of the I Forum MedThink 5+5 entitled “The 5+5 Dialogue as a Mechanism of Integration and Regional Cooperation: For a common reflection on the Western Mediterranean” that was held in Barcelona in May 2016.

This Dossier pools various articles from the Mediterranean Yearbook (a publication of IEMed) adressing the 5+5 Dialogue and the Western Mediterranean region political, economic and social challenges.
